Olympic Equestrian Center & Racecourse

Architectural Design & Landscaping

The installations of the Olympic Equestrian Center and of the New Racecourse of Athens in Marcopoulo were deployed in an area of 2,112,000m², with strong topographic fluctuations and with many archaeological findings. Particular emphasis has been given to the incorporation of the complex to the environment. The Olympic Equestrian Center is located to the north and the racecourse is located on the north-east side the Cross-Country space extends from the south-east to the south-west side. The main buildings of the Olympic Equestrian Center are the jumping arena with 6.000 permanent stands and the dressage arena with 2.000 permanent stands, the VIP building, a closed race-training arena, a vet clinic, high-specification stables, and a support building complex. The complex of the New Athens Racecourse has a double track, for racing and training, and an extensive traffic network for the exclusive use of horses, while all main roofed uses are concentrated in the Grandstand, located in front of the finish line of the track. The Grandstand has a minimalistic style, with plain and simple lines adopting the same architectural design used in the buildings of the Equestrian Center. The planning of the surrounding space has been performed for the Olympic Center and the Racecourse as a whole. The total building area is 164.138m².

Olympic Athletic Centre of Athens

The project for the aesthetic integration of the Olympic Athletic Centre of
Athens (OAKA) was designed by the well-known Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.

The project included the following partial projects: Service infrastructure,
outdoor areas and surroundings of the Athens Olympic centre / Velodrome Roof / Redesign of velodrome interior (5,250 spectators capacity) / Main Olympic Stadium roof / Service spaces / Wall of Nations / Olympic Centre Entrances / Tunnels / Parking Lots /Athletes warmup facilities.

The scope of work included: Water Supply / Sewage and Rainwater / Fire
Protection / Lighting / Power / Electrical Substation / Telephones - Data / Sound Facilities / CCTV) / Lighting and Earthing / Elevators / Special installation (compressed air, vacuum system, gases, etc.)

Faliron Bay Development

In the context of the 2004 Olympic Games the Ministry of Public Works appointed the design along the coast of Faliron Bay of a comprehensive development with emphasis on leisure and sport activities. As part of the group, the Firm designed all Marine works including the Marina, the seawall and coastal protection and the waterfront promenade wall as well as providing structural design for numerous buildings and several bridges and traffic studies.
The main features of this project included the following: Extensive landfill with the creation of a new 1.5 km quay wall forming an arc to the southeastern end of the bay. Also utilized for the creation of a pedestrian promenade / Reconstruction of the mouth of the Ilissos river / Construction of a 50m wide pedestrian "Esplanade" / Construction of a 400 - berth nautical sports Marina / Two Olympic Stadiums, one for Beach-Volley and one for Tae-kwon-do with 7 training courts nearby and one new football stadium / A 1km long series of linear buildings joined with pedestrian bridges at their roof level / Extensive open spaces for recreation and leisure. The hydraulic component in short provided for : / Flood control / Water Supply networks / Sanitation networks / Irrigation system including the option of re-use of treated water from a WasteWater Treatment Plant.

Olympic Sailing Center, Agios Kosmas

The land zone has an area of 382,000m2. The sea zone covers 165,000m2 with a maximum depth of 8m. Buildings (8,945m2) include offices, restaurant, multi-purpose halls, locker rooms, medical areas, kitchens, plant rooms and a helipad.

The center has 1,200 parking spaces and 1,660m long boat docking front.

Olympic Sports Hall, Galatsi

Mechanical & Electrical Design

The sports hall is located in Galatsi, Athens, Greece and was the venue, during the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, for Table Tennis and Rhythmic Gymnastics.

It covers an area of 92,800m2 with a capacity of 5,200 spectators. The Galatsi Olympic Centre (36,000m2) consists of the competition floor (dimensions 30x60m), service and storage spaces, gymnastics area with two warm up rooms (one with dimensions 64x28.5m – minimum free height 10m, the other 63x28m minimum free height 12.5m) and 400 parking spaces.

Technical Consultant - Project Management

Consortium comprising four Greek companies, rendered Technical Consultant Services (Project Management) for the Coordination and Administration of Olympic Projects and specifically for the 7 following stadiums: - Galatsi Olympic Hall - Nikaia Olympic Weightlifting Hall - Pankritio Stadium, Heraklion - Kaftanzoglion Stadium, Thessaloniki - Ano Liossia Olympic Hall - Panthessaliko Stadium, Volos - Pampeloponnisiako Stadium, Patra.

There was also an active participation and supervision of the reconstruction of many training sites at 4 Olympic Cities (Patra, Heraklion, Volos and Thessaloniki).
The project’s scope of services covered all levels of construction including completion of tender documents, monitoring of the execution of contractual obligations and recommendations for amendments, scrutiny of the insurance agreements, health and safety issues of projects, programming of detailed design and projects, quality control of projects, monitoring of the absorption of funds of the projects, legal counseling.

Thermi ‘Palais des Sports’ Indoor Gym

Architectural Competition, Thessaloniki, Greece

Architectural Design Proposal

The proposal for the construction of a new Gymnasium complex in Thermi, Thessaloniki consisted of:

- Indoor Track & Field with a grandstand for 15,000 spectators
- Service Buildings and Training Grounds
- Medical Centre
- Press/Media Centre

Total internal floor area: 50,000m2
